I am so grateful to have been able to spend the day sharing seats with Dave McKay, CEO of RBC. Through the #GirlsBelongHere initiative with Plan Canada, I shared this role to demonstrate to girls that these leadership positions ARE within our reach if we learn to overcome self doubt and break free of the limiting narratives we place on ourselves. As Dave put it, just ask yourself the question “why not me?” and with a ton of hard work, one day it can be yours.
I was lucky enough to spend the morning with powerful female leaders like Kathleen Taylor, Helena Gottschling and Kelly Pereira, and soaked in their triumphs, tribulations and the incredible advice they had to share. Thank you to Gopal Bansal for your thoughtful questions and the way you represented the various projects RBC has launched to create this remarkable environment.
To Lucia Liscio, Alexandra Knox and the rest of the team breaking barriers in Capital Markets (Selina, Harleen, Denise to name a few!), thank you for showing me the immense capabilities of females in male dominated fields. Cameron, Wazhma, André Roberts, you all did an incredible job of representing the company’s incredible philanthropic efforts and I am so inspired by you all. A special thank you to Alexander Peh, Jennifer Broeders, Shelley, Vincent, Madeeha, Zachary and the rest of the Innovation team for the warm welcome and for igniting a spark within me to use creativity and forward thinking to overcome barriers wherever life takes me. Thank you Gopal Bansal for your thoughtful questions and the way you represented the projects RBC has launched to create this remarkable environment. Thank you Cam DesBrisay and Lynda Gauthier for showing me a glimpse into your work fighting as allies for the rights of women and minorities; you’ve enlightened me!
A huge thank you to the Global Diversity Team, especially Ali Najafi for making this day so special. I appreciate your organization and the time you put in behind the scenes to make this day seamless. Thank you to Plan International Canada very own, Lynda Debono for cheering me on throughout the day! I learned so much about just how diverse and innovative this group of over 86,000 individuals are and despite these big numbers, how successful RBC is in fostering an environment of equality and inclusion. The company puts great emphasis in ensuring that not only is there space on the table for everyone, but that each individual is given opportunities to have their voices heard.
To Dave, thank you for your words of advice and for willingly turning our 15 minute meetings into 2 hour long powerful discussions. I will cherish these conversations for a lifetime.
To Plan International Canada, thank you for this opportunity to demonstrate to other girls and women just how possible it is to #DEFYNORMAL. The work you do to advance gender equality is unparalleled, I am so grateful to you.
