About early literacy
I asked one of our indie authors, Jennifer Misener to share why early literacy is so important for children. Here’s what she had to say:
One of the best things you can do for your child is spend time reading with them. Reading has been connected to school success, and it opens up a world of possibilities for learning. There is so much information locked away in books, not even half of it is online yet. If you can read you can learn anything. If you can write you can pass on what you’ve learned to others.
If your child isn’t interested in books, think outside of the box (or book). My husband struggled to learn to read as a child but loved video games. You would be surprised how much reading there is involved in video games and the wording is not simple. Still spend the time reading with or to your child, but don’t be afraid to label unconventional reading activities as valuable reading time!
