Through meeting with high schoolers at a local homeless shelter, I learned that many had felt extremely embarrassed having to dig through garbage bags for clothing items that were in not so great shape or not the appropriate size and style. Access to adequate clothing is a human right, yet so many are still deprived of it. Through this project, I have received an overwhelmingly positive response about how our bear hug boxes are changing the way that individuals give and receive clothing items. Community members are taking the time to sort, repair and wash their clothing items prior to donating. This seems like a small step forward, but for those on the receiving end, being treated with humanity and respect can mean so much more. I hope to continue advocating for the rights of people and encouraging individuals to find ways to reuse and repurpose their clothing rather than sending them to landfills prematurely.
